“Mild Turbulence”
Artist Statement
Internal lighting effects and entwined color bands combine to create an illusion of unrest or instability in the atmosphere. Mild turbulence, or movement in the fields of color, alludes to the idea that forces in nature are in a constant state of change.
With subtle nods to historical painting, such as Baroque lighting, the concept of the sublime, and painterly effects of the Romantic period, this investigation continues the dialogue of Color Field painting by adding illusionistic depth into the plane.
While abrupt edges are gently concealed in various thin layers of paint, the colors shift to hint at impermanence, reminding the viewer of the temporal state of existence. While harmony exists, the paintings lack stillness due to meandering lines and colors. Ephemeral and atmospheric, these works attempt to capture the intangible and ever-changing realities that transcend the physical world.
