Eric Taylor was born in 1974, and spent the majority of his childhood and

adolescent years growing up in San Antonio.   After attending San Antonio

Community College, Eric went on to obtain a BFA in Painting from the San

Francisco Art Institute where he was awarded a continuing merit scholarship

based on his work.   Eric currently lives and works in San Antonio.

My work deals with the expression of a tamed sense of identity.   In my work,

I have appropriated a loose grid that acts as a sort of analogue language

used to communicate my imagination.   With my drawings I intend to suggest

the duality between natural occurrence and systematic structuring as a

metaphor for a general sense of identity.   Painting allows me to stray from

the grid in order to discover purity through unguided decision making.   I

feel like the paintings are about being freed from the grid, while the

drawings unwillingly accept the grid as part of my own identity.   For me,

the clarity of the drawings as opposed to the cryptic nature of the

paintings describes the simultaneity that underlies human experience and

ultimately forms the true character.
