Artist statement

Beauty is a sticky, cumbersome thing.  As best I can surmise, it is an impossibly powerful monster that vanishes as soon as you lean in to inspect it.  It is my artistic and intellectual instinct to root it out by lavishing its sensual qualities on the viewer.  I believe the wordless commonality of human experience is discovered not through high-minded discourse, but in the intricate and transient world around us.  The medium of painting and its rich history offer the perfect dichotomy; a simultaneous invitation and denial of entry.  Space and flatness, illusion and object, and every other opposing force in these paintings rise up like mountains of certainty within my mind.  The intervening valleys are filled with the shadowy, unexplainable experience of life, wherein lurks the often glimpsed but never named monster that is beauty.
